Meet The Rogues — Jennifer Ellision

Author Jennifer Ellision

Do you have a day job, or are you a full-time writer? What is your day job? Has it helped your writing?

I wish I was a full-time writer! I currently work part-time in an office as an office manager. As non-author work goes, it’s pretty much the best situation I could wish for because it does leave me with a decent amount of time to devote to my writing.

What kind of books do you read in your free time?

I tend to read the same kinds of books I like writing: fierce, lady-led YA epic fantasy. Some favorite authors are Sarah J. Maas, Leigh Bardugo, Susan Dennard, and Jordan Rivet.

What are you currently working on?

I’m wrapping up the last book in my Lady Pirates series and also working on a project that’s actually Top Secret! ^_~ I can tell you this much: it involves fairy tales and it’s gonna be epic!

Who designed your book cover?

The cover for The Wrong Witch was designed by Ljiljana Romanovic. It was actually a premade cover that I ADORED. When I saw it, I had to have it!

Do you have a favorite book quote?

If you say a word, it leaps out and becomes the truth. –Chime by Franny Billingsley

What is your favorite underappreciated novel?

Though I think it was a finalist for the National Book Award several years ago, I’m gonna say Chime here again because I never hear people talk about it and I just think it’s so beautifully written.

What is your favorite/most frustrating part of the writing process?

The most frustrating part is probably the pressure I place upon myself to write better, faster. But by the same token, I think that’s why I’m able to publish books that my readers love much faster than I used to. My favorite is definitely interacting with readers.

What inspired you to write your last book?

This piece of art: “Freak” by artist Wlop inspired my Cinderella-as-an-assassin story: Striking Midnight. I’m not sure exactly what it was—maybe the stairs? But the book’s blurb came to me in a rush.

How did you come up with the title for your book?

It was all thanks to the designer’s gorgeous artwork! The art looked like someone had messed with The Wrong Witch.

Book Blurb

Once every one hundred years, her coven chooses a priestess. This time, they chose wrong.

Every century, when the witch moon rises, the Elantis Coven chooses their most talented witch as their priestess and imbues her with the generations’ worth of power from priestesses who came before her.

It was supposed to be Seline’s sister.

It was NOT supposed to be Seline.

But when something goes horribly wrong, Seline– clumsy, untalented Seline, who never held more than a pinky’s worth of the coven’s power until now–is the one instilled with unimaginable gifts.

She’s sent to the Realm’s Witch Tower with her resentful sister and the last priestess.

But a great evil is rising from deep within the earth and word has gotten out that the realm’s protector is little more than a novice.

Can Seline master the coven’s gifts in time to save them all?
