Meet The Rogues — Karen M. Bryson

Author Karen M. Bryson

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a bestselling romantic mystery and suspense novelist. My writing has humor, heart, and quirky characters. I’m also an award-winning/optioned screenwriter. When I’m not writing, you can find me riding around the neighborhood on my bicycle, traveling, or spending time with my husband and our bloodhounds.

I also co-write novels and scripts with Candace Segar. We write science fiction with kickass female characters.

What is your favorite underappreciated novel?

My favorite novel is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, although I’m not sure it is unappreciated.

Tell us about your main character.

Charlotte co-owns a comic book shop with her sister, Ginny. They inherited the shop from their Aunt Wanda. Due mostly to Charlotte’s bad decisions and her lack of knowledge about how to run a business, the place is on the verge of going bankrupt. Charlotte lives in the shadow of her older sister, who is prettier, smarter and much more athletic than Charlotte. Charlotte, who is in her early 30s when the novel PRIVATE SKIES begins, is still trying to find herself and figure out what she’s good at. The only thing she’s passionate about is comic books and collectables.

What makes your book different from others in its genre?

PRIVATE SKIES is a comedic sci-fi adventure featuring two female protagonists. There aren’t a lot of comedic science fiction stories and most of those that are published feature male protagonists.

Do you have a favorite scene in the last book you wrote? Tell us about it.

My favorite scene in PRIVATE SKIES is when my character, Charlotte, gets stung multiple times by a gigantic, genetically altered bee. Getting stung by an insect of that size wreaks havoc on her body (and gives her superpowers), but I managed to make the scene humorous as well. This scene is also one of the first times in the story when we see the love between Charlotte and her sister. The siblings do have a rivalry, but they have each other’s backs when they are in trouble.

Who designed your book cover?

My talented husband designs all my book covers.

What is the best resource for authors?

I highly recommend reading THE IDEA by Erik Bork. Whenever I start a new project, I read that book again. It’s priceless.

What are you currently working on?

In addition to writing novels, I’m also a screenwriter. I’m working on several scripts that I am actively pitching to producers.

Do you have a day job, or are you a full-time writer? What is your day job? Has it helped your writing?

I work full-time as a university professor.

What kind of books do you read in your free time?

I don’t have much free time. My reading tastes are eclectic. I’m currently reading nonfiction books on Prohibition as research for a new project.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Take a screenwriting class even if you don’t plan to write movies or TV shows. Learning screenwriting teaches you how to write visually as well as learning the importance of conflict, subtext, and scene work.

What if our fiction is reality in a parallel universe?

When two sisters slip into a parallel universe, they soon discover that they’ve landed inside the world of a beloved comic book: Vic Starr Cosmic Spy. But Vic Starr is nothing like the superhero he portrays in the comics. And when he hands over his duties to the sibling rivals, the sisters must learn to work together to become the heroes of their own story.
